Alan worked in the NHS as a doctor for 37 years, 32 of those years working as a GP in the Green Medical Practice in Clydebank. He is grateful to the many people there who shared their life experience with him.
He was a Medical Director (and Chair) of Glasgow Local Medical Committee for many years. As Chair of the Scottish GP Committee of the BMA 2012-2018, he led the development and introduction of the 2018 Scottish GP Contract.
He has held several posts in the NHS including chair of the Area Medical Committee for Greater Glasgow Health Board, Chair of Clydebank Local Health Care Committee, Vice-chair of West Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of GPs.
Awarded a CBE in 2019 for services to the NHS and GPs in Scotland.
