Today (30th Nov) marks the first anniversary of Lanarkshire Beatson as it celebrates a full year of support for up to 80 patients a day who require radiotherapy treatment.
The Centre is equipped with the most advanced technology to deliver the same world-class treatment and techniques currently provided at the Glasgow Beatson Centre. This includes two new state-of-the-art linear accelerators, which deliver high-energy radiation to shrink tumours and kill cancer cells, with expansion space for a third machine, if required. The Centre also has a CT simulator to help plan radiotherapy treatment.
Beatson Cancer Charity has played a big part with many of the enhancements in the building including its own therapy room to provide complementary wellbeing therapies, Sky Ceilings within the treatment areas, an outdoor space which can be utilised by both patients and staff to create relaxing therapeutic atmosphere and decorative wall finishes help to reduce stress.
With people now living longer after their diagnosis the number of people living with cancer is estimated to rise by about 19% in Lanarkshire, which makes the radiotherapy centre more important than ever to support The Beatson.
As it is already proving to help increase access to state-of-the-art radiotherapy treatments and allow many more patients in the West of Scotland to be treated closer to home.
