After losing their dad and husband last year, a Glasgow family is supporting our Beatson Bauble appeal and encouraging others to do the same to help more families facing cancer.

Norrie was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013, which later spread to his bones in 2015, and in 2017 Pauline, her sisters Caroline and Karen and their mum Catherine, were told the cancer was terminal.

We never expected this would happen to our dad, I don’t think anybody ever does. Some may say that we were unlucky, which we were, but we honestly felt so fortunate that dad was getting such an outstanding level of care and support at The Beatson.

Pauline

Pauline said that despite his diagnosis, Norrie remained so positive and never gave up hope. She said: “The staff and nurses at The Beatson truly removed the dark cloud and made our journey manageable – for dad, mum, us and the kids.”

Norrie spent a lot of time at Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre, which is a quiet and relaxing space within The Beatson where patients can spend time away from a ward environment. Pauline said:

“We would often turn up at The Beatson to find dad in the Wellbeing Centre being pampered. It was so nice to see the man, who was always so busy, getting his nails cut or his hair cut, while having a cup of tea.

“He just loved being able to leave the ward and escape to an environment where could completely unwind and relax.

“The Wellbeing Centre will always hold a special place in our hearts. It was nice to spend time with Dad in a non-clinical space, it put us all at ease.

“We would look out of the panoramic windows across Glasgow and Dad would show us where he played football as a child, while telling us stories about the buildings he could see.

“And he would often shuffle us out 15 minutes early so that he could get the best seat in the cinema room to watch the football. It was his home from home; he was so happy in there.”

Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre is funded by donations. Open seven days a week, it is a unique space and a haven for patients. Martin Cawley, Beatson Cancer Charity’s Chief Executive, said:

“Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre couldn’t exist without our generous supporters.

“We want to make sure that our services are always available to help families like Pauline’s during what can be a very difficult and emotional time. By supporting our Bauble appeal, you’ll be doing just that.

“Everyone will have their own reason for hanging a bauble – in memory of a loved one, to say thank you to The Beatson, or to even show support for those facing cancer this Christmas.

“By supporting our Bauble appeal this Christmas, you are helping us continue to provide unique care and services to many more people and families facing cancer this Christmas and beyond.”
