Meet Irene Wotherspoon, Beatson Cancer Charity-funded Advance Clinical Nurse Specialist for Neuroendocrine and Thyroid Cancer.
Irene provides patients and those closest to them, with a unique blend of practical support, care and emotional advice. Currently she looks after 135 patients diagnosed with neuroendocrine and thyroid cancer.
Neuroendocrine tumours and cancers can occur anywhere in the body and although quite rare, their prevalence is rising. They can be associated with some very unpleasant symptoms. While many patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer have a very good outlook, for a small number of patients advanced treatments can produce toxic side effects.
Irene can bring all her experience together for the benefit of patients at clinics and in wards at The Beatson and local hospitals. For some this may involve palliative care, an area of nursing where Irene is also highly experienced.
The impact of Irene’s work is far reaching for patients. Not only does she offer professional clinical advice, she also offers compassion and reassurance.
