The Laird Family Are Going Off The Beatson Track Their Own Way!

Beatson Cancer Charity is going virtual with their 7th annual Off the Beatson Track in August. After careful deliberation, the charity has decided to host the mass participation event online and change to a virtual challenge to prioritise the health and safety of the community during this time. 

The Laird family from Kilmarnock want to turn their local villages and towns yellow on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd of August. 

The Laird family from Kilmarnock are very much looking forward to taking part as the family have faced a difficult cancer journey over recent years. 

Colin Laird was diagnosed with cancer for a third time leaving his family devastated.  The outlook wasn’t good with Colin having to keep positive mindset whilst trying to balance a family and work life.  Wife, Lesley explains,

“Colin has remained positive and I believe this has got us to where we are – two and a half years on after many sessions of chemotherapy, Colin is now receiving immunotherapy treatment.  Responding well with our daily regime.” 

“I know Colin wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the medical treatments from Crosshouse and Beatson West of Scotland hospital. Beatson Cancer Charity have been by our side through their support and we have made friends for life.”   

“As cancer affects 1 in 2 people there needs to be a cure found.  We are fortunate that we are now living with cancer and many others don’t get that opportunity.  We will continue to give back by continuing our fundraising efforts to reach our goal of £100,000 – we are hoping our local community will support Off the Beatson Track event.”

Maisie McCormick, Community Fundraising Manager recognises the importance of this event to the charity, adding,  

“The last 6 years has seen over 11,000 participants walk over 70,000 miles - making it West of Scotland’s biggest, best and most yellow sponsored walk.”  

“Each year, 1 in 2 people in West of Scotland are affected with cancer.  Proceeds for this event will be dedicated to extension of support services and continued investment in vital research at Beatson Cancer hospital. This is our biggest event of the year and we are extremely disappointed not to be able to hold it in the normal format, but I very much hope this virtual experience will be just as much fun and encourage even more supporters to sign up”
