After careful deliberation, Beatson Cancer Charity has decided to host the mass participation event online and change to a virtual challenge to prioritise the health and safety of the community during this time.
Let’s turn villages, towns and the city yellow on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd of August.
Given the current circumstances surrounding COVID-19, the charity was keen to find a way to offer 2 DAYS of opportunities to keep the much-loved experience in the calendar and a way to continue raising funds for cancer research and its services.
The charity flagship event, a 10k (6.5miles) challenge is suitable for all ages and mobility and is guaranteed a great ‘feel-good’ event. This year should be no different with Beatson Cancer Charity hoping that supporters will continue their celebration with Off The Beatson Track.
Families can still take part but by staying local instead of the usual mass gathering city loop. Everyone can create their own route and participate in their own way. It’s entirely up to you! All we ask is that you join in, wear yellow and enjoy yourself!
Adult entry fees (FREE for kids) will allow participants to gain exclusive access to pre-recorded entertainment, a specially prepared playlist and celebrity commentary via the new Off the Beatson Track podcast. Designed to help everyone on their way.
Martin Cawley, CEO of Beatson Cancer Charity is enthusiastic about this year’s change in format stating:
“We wanted to find a way to continue the celebration of Off the Beatson Track during August whilst respecting social distancing arrangements. So, we are offering a few more creative ways to continue participation and enjoyment. I hope many take part with their family and friends.
"Our work to provide better, more effective support to people during their cancer journey relies so much on public support. We hope many will join us in doubling the impact of last year’s campaign by reaching our goal of more than 2,500 participants this year.”
Maisie McCormick, Community Fundraising Manager recognises the importance of this event to the charity, adding:
“The last 6 years has seen over 11,000 participants walk over 70,000 miles - making it Glasgow's biggest, best and most yellow sponsored walk.
“Each year, 1 in 2 people in West of Scotland are affected with cancer. Proceeds for this event will be dedicated to extension of support services and continued investment in vital research at Beatson Cancer hospital.
"This is our biggest event of the year and we are extremely disappointed not to be able to hold it in the normal format, but I very much hope this virtual experience will be just as much fun and encourage even more supporters to sign up”
