Volunteer - Ellys Wakeman

Throughout this uncertain time we have been blown away by the drive and enthusiasm of our volunteers.

Today, we're getting to know Ellys who has been a part of the team supporting staff and patients directly at The Beatson, providing hand sanitiser at the entrances of the hospital.

What compelled you to volunteer during COVID-19?

My daughter is a student nurse working on the front line in Aberdeen and, having understood the pressure under which the NHS is working, wanted to do whatever I could to support NHS and key workers. I have had friends pass through The Beatson as patients and have always admired the exceptional care and respect they have received. My company enabled me to spend 1 day a week volunteering and delighted to be supporting The Beatson.

How are you keeping busy at home?

Working and gym. Lots of time on video conferences and virtual gym. Also I have a 2 year old pup who never says no to a walk!!

Do you have children at home? How are you keeping them amused?

One has moved home due to COVID 19. He is 24 and finishing a post graduate degree. I keep him amused with the odd free bottle of prosecco!

Who are you missing the most?

My daughter, a student nurse working in HDU at RGU. Can’t wait to see her.

How are you keeping in touch with friends and family?

Zoom, phone, Facetime. I keep hearing this is future but need a hug!!

Any top tips for coping with lockdown?

I am lucky to be working, gym, volunteering and my son living with me. Structure with breaks works for me.

What’s the first thing you are going to do when lock down is over?

Spend time with both my children, and I haven’t seen my partner since lockdown started so I will spend time with him where he lives in beautiful Perthshire.

Have you been doing any exercise at home? Be honest!

4 times a week, 2 PT and 2 group classes. Virtual, but great. I have a couple of kettle bells which help. Different from face to face but it's working!!

Have you been getting out for some daily exercise?

Yes, Luna, my Tibetan terrier, keeps me active. We have a golf course nearby and she is loving the freedom, as am I!

Is there anything you are enjoying about having time at home?

Time to appreciate what we have locally. Previously I spent 1 to 2 nights a week in London. Now we're connecting remotely. I do miss the people, but not 5am starts!

People across Scotland are now making (sometimes) disastrous attempts at cutting their own hair. Will you be cutting your own hair?

Nope!! Shaved my son’s and Luna’s, but no - only my hairdresser gets near mine. However, I have done a little bit of wash out colour to hide the grey!!

Do you have a message to share with our brilliant NHS and key workers?

I am very proud of the selflessness, resolve and determination of all NHS staff during these challenging times.
Their selflessness, support and courage is inspiring and so needed at this time. Thank you!!

Thank you for your time Ellys, and for all the wonderful volunteer work you're doing!
