Say Hello to our 2021 Ambassadog Milo!

Milo was nominated by his mum (owner) Erin, who went through cancer treatment 15 years ago. 25-year old Erin Phairs from Irvine was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma when she was just 9-years old. Two years after her cancer treatment finished, she began to struggle with PTSD following her diagnosis. Erin’s mum got Milo for her to try and help her through the difficult times she was facing. She says she doesn’t think she would be here if it wasn’t for Milo.

Erin said:

“We’re over the moon to find out Milo is the new Beatson Ambassadog – I feel so proud of him. Being able to represent the charity while helping others is amazing. I don’t think I’d be here without Milo. He’s saved my life numerous times. Milo has been there for me through everything and stayed by my side and literally licked away my tears during my journey post-cancer.

Without Milo, I don’t think I could have done it. Milo has been so vital in my recovery and we decided it wasn’t fair to keep his special healing powers to ourselves, so Milo became a therapy dog meaning he can help so many others.”

Milo will take over from Comet the golden retriever, who has been our Ambassadog since last year. Comet was chosen after he was put forward by his owner Claire, whose aunt died from cancer in 2017 and her mum was treated at the Beatson during her cancer journey.

Charlene Low, our Corporate Partnerships Fundraiser who organised Paw Walk said:

"This event was created during lockdown due to the love and support we all receive from our four-legged friends during difficult times in our lives. Last year's virtual event saw 105 dogs sign up and raise over £6,000 and this year even more dogs signed up with 220 dogs from all over Scotland signing up - with many fundraising for their families facing cancer.  We are still receiving donations but it looks like this year's fundraising will exceed last year. With the restrictions lifted compared to last year, we were able to promote alongside our other supporters such as Creature Comforts, Melts Ice Cream Parlour in Milngavie and dog-friendly bars.

Comet, who is last year’s Ambassadog, has been an incredible support helping us to promote this year's Paw Walk and was the face of our campaign. We’re delighted Milo has won, although the competition was so close! As a dog-loving charity, we all struggled to pick a winner. I've loved every minute of hearing all the great stories and meeting all the dogs. We are looking forward to work with Milo next year, but know that Comet and all the other dogs will continue to support those facing cancer and be an Ambassadog for their owners.” 

Throughout National Dog Week from the 20th to the 26th September 2021 we celebrated our wonderful four-legged supporters. During lockdown, our furry friends were a huge support to us all. Hundreds of dogs across Scotland took part in our Paw Walk to raise money for Beatson Cancer Charity last week, where the first 50 sign-ups received an amazing Creature Comforts goodie bag. 

Milo has won becoming next year’s OTBT Ambassadog along with a personalised medal. Our 2nd, 3rd and 4th runner up places will also receive prizes. You can also support us simply by purchasing a dog collar or lead made in our Beatson Cancer Charity Tartan from our online shop.
