Beatson Cancer Charity is celebrating its 10th birthday following a decade of providing support services and funding research for cancer patients across the west of Scotland.

The charity was formed on 27th February 2014 following the merger of Friends of the Beatson and The Beatson Oncology Fund.

Since then, donations have enabled the charity to support the wellbeing of thousands of patients and help fund groundbreaking research and clinical trials.

Beatson Cancer Charity’s wellbeing team have offered expert care, support and therapies to over 260,000 individuals in the last decade.

The charity has also invested £34 million into innovative research, including support for clinical trials and new clinical services. This includes £19 million of grant awards.

It has supported over 210,000 Welcome Desk enquiries within the hospital, offering a vital sign-posting and advisory service for anyone who walks through The Beatson’s doors.

The charity is also supported by time-generous volunteers who have gifted over 77,000 hours to helping with tea trolleys around wards, events, support in the charity’s Wellbeing Centre and at the cafe.

There are many patient support services offered by Beatson Cancer Charity: Specialist Health and Work Service, Group Programmes, Bereavement Support service and the Befriending service. The Specialist Health and Work team has offered support to over 10,000 people.

The Group Programmes offer two different workshops to those who face the challenges and worries associated with a cancer diagnosis: Living with Uncertainty and Fear of Recurrence. Over 200 participants have been supported since the programme launched in 2021.

During the pandemic, the Befriending telephone service was launched for those impacted by loneliness. It transformed lives by providing 3,500 befriending calls and offering meaningful support to the community.

The Bereavement Support service also launched in October 2022 and has so far provided support to over 200 families and friends following the loss of a loved one.

37-year old Patrick Baines got in touch with our Bereavement Support service team following the death of his mum and sister.

Patrick said: “I couldn’t recommend it enough. For anybody that is going through a really tough time, I would recommend you give it a try.”

The charity’s cafe, situated at The Beatson, has continued to be a huge success over the years – serving over 700,000 hot drinks in 2022 alone.

Beatson Cancer Charity’s decade of achievements wouldn’t be possible without those who fundraise, donate, attend events and gift their time throughout the year.
