63-year old Peter Abernethy will be participating in ‘Off the Beatson Track’, which takes place on Sunday 25th August in Glasgow’s West End, which STV’s Laura Boyd and Heart FM and BBC’s David Farrell will be hosting.

His wife, Cath, will also be joining him on the walk. The couple hope to raise over £500 for the charity.

Peter, from Carstairs, is currently going through treatment, four years on from his cancer diagnosis.

He said: “The doctors thought that if the cancer were to come back it would have come back at the same part. However, as time was going on it was spreading, and it had spread to the back of the eye and into the bone.”

Peter was previously diagnosed with skin cancer in 2020 and was diagnosed again earlier this year, which resulted in him losing his eye.

Peter said: “. I am still getting radiotherapy to prevent it coming back and I couldn’t have done it without The Beatson, doctors and nurses and all my friends and family.

He says he wants to do the walk to give back following the support and treatment he has received.

Peter said: “I am quite a quiet guy, so sometimes I find it hard to find the words to speak about how I feel, but The Beatson have been there for me and have helped me speak more with my family.

“Beatson Cancer Charity are always there for me if myself or Cath are having a bad day, and we appreciate that as The Beatson are giving us strength to continue.”

Peter says he wants to be a part of the positive change for cancer patients in the future.

He added: “It’s been the people behind me that’s kept me going through all of this.”
