Nicole Lowther and her dog Juno, Beatson Cancer Charity’s Ambassadog, are sharing a message of love and gratitude this Christmas by supporting the Beatson Bauble Appeal.
At just 17, Nicole was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After treatment, she enjoyed nearly five years in remission. However, in November 2023, she learned her cancer had returned as Stage 4, after initially thinking a sore shoulder was a running injury.
“I actually ran a half marathon raising money for Beatson Cancer Charity a month before I relapsed,” Nicole said. “I thought the soreness in my shoulder was just from running. Luckily, I hadn’t finished my five-year check-ups at that point.”
Nicole’s resilience and gratitude shine through as she reflects on the support she and her loved ones have received from Beatson Cancer Charity.
“People often think the hospital and the charity are the same thing, but they’re separate,” she explained. “Having the charity’s presence within the hospital really sets it apart from other cancer care centres. I can’t even put into words how much the charity has supported me, my family, my partner, and my friends. I don’t know what we would have done without them.”
Christmas is a time for family, love, and togetherness for Nicole and her partner, especially now with Juno in their lives. Last year, they hosted their first Christmas in their new home, just after Nicole’s diagnosis, and this year, they’re excited to create new traditions with Juno.
“Christmas to us is all about family,” Nicole said. “It’s about spending time together, giving each other gifts, showing how much we love each other, and, of course, eating great food. This year, having Juno with us makes it even more special.”
Nicole also shared advice for anyone facing a cancer diagnosis this Christmas. “Take it as slow as you can. Each day will bring its own challenges, but also its own happiness. Take each day as it comes and enjoy the festivities as normally as possible.”
Everyone has their own reason for dedicating a Beatson Bauble. Whether it’s to remember a loved one, thank the staff at The Beatson, or give hope to patients, every donation makes a difference. When you donate to the Bauble Appeal, you’ll receive two baubles: one for your tree at home and one to send back to hang on the Beatson tree.
Rachel Mullin, Individual Giving Officer at Beatson Cancer Charity, said, “We’re so pleased to be launching our Bauble Appeal again this year. Nicole’s story is full of strength, hope, and gratitude, and we’re so proud to have her support. Her positivity is truly inspiring, and her message of love and kindness reflects the spirit of what we do at Beatson Cancer Charity.”
